Bloxwich 0 – 0 Stafford
On a cold and windy morning, Stafford resumed their league fixtures after the half term break away against Bloxwich.
The match was very scrappy. Although Stafford dominated the possession they struggled with their passing and were carrying the ball into the Bloxwich defensive tackles.
Their best chance of the first half came from a penalty corner when player of the match Helen Paling’s strike from the top of the circle was deflected by Amy Mitchell on the far post only to be stopped on the goal line by a defensive foot. Unfortunately the resulting penalty stroke was put just wide of the left hand post.
The second half saw Stafford gain a bit more composure. They increased the intensity of their play and started to pepper the home side goal with chances. Julie Hart had an excellent opportunity to put the away side ahead when she received the ball in the centre of the circle with the goal keeper out of position but her swept shot didn’t quite have the pace and the keeper was able to dive across and push the ball wide.
Bloxwich remained dangerous on the break with pace down their right wing and Nicky Sweeney was called into action in the Stafford goal to save a high shot on her near post to keep a clean sheet.
Stafford did have the ball in the net in the closing minutes of the game however the umpire had failed to play the advantage and took the play back to an offense outside the circle.
Stafford came away disappointed as they felt like they should have won but the draw gives them their first point of the season
