CANNOCK 4 vs. STAFFORD 2

Due to the bad weather Stafford Ladies Hockey Club have had a long two weeks off from any training or matches, however this week all teams were eager to return to playing. Stafford 2nds were playing away against Cannock 4ths and knew that Cannock are always going to be a tough opposition.

The game started off slow as everyone was trying to get back into the routine of playing. Possession was shared between each of the teams, until Stafford broke through with Donna Thurgarland firing a powerful ball through to Eleanor Barnett who managed to score a well executed goal from a very tight angle. The second goal followed shortly after when Stafford was able to capitalise on a quick break from the back.

Following the second goal from Stafford; Cannock came back strong and scored a late goal just before the whistle for half time.

The second half started with another well worked goal from Cannock to bring the score level. Stafford then had to dig deep and after much possession, hard work and many chances from the likes of Amy Williams and Emily Hannigan, another chance broke through when again Donna Thurgarland managed to find Eleanor Barnett who’s first shot was saved by the goal keeper but the rebound managed to find its way through.

Knowing that Stafford weren’t home and dry yet as Cannock had come from behind twice, Stafford had to keep the pressure up. Cannock had many more chances but they were defended well by the likes of Lana Sweeney and Berni Booth-Bendall. The final goal came from a quick ball up the left wing from Emily Hannigan to Eleanor Barnett, who crossed the ball to the top of the D where a cool Amy Williams hit the ball into the bottom left hand corner. The whistle went shortly after with the final score 4:2 to Stafford.
