1st XI 15/10/16 v Stafford 2s

Stafford 1sts 2 – 1 Stafford 2nds

In what is always a well fought game from both sides, Stafford 1sts kept up their fight to finish the game 2-1. The game was end to end with both sides battling for possession.

Amy Mitchell started off the scoring thanks to a well-executed penalty corner for the 2nds. The strike from Becky Blakey at the top of the circle was deftly touched home by Mitchell on the far post to put the 2nds in front.

The 1sts felt an increase in pressure as the 2nds used the goal to lift their game further. Many opportunities came for the 1sts however Nicky Sweeney the 2nd team keeper made a number of saves keeping the 2nds in the lead.

Towards the end of the first period the 1sts won their first penalty corner of the game. A straight strike from Katie Thomas was goal bound but was cleared by Helen Paling on the line. The 1sts kept up the pressure winning a second penalty corner in quick succession. This time Charlotte May took the strike but another goal line save from Paling kept the seconds in front.

The 1st team showed their hunger for the win pouncing on every rebound. The equaliser came when Amy Williams reacted quickest to a save from Sweeney, her fantastic shot in the air from the right post making the score line 1-1 at half time.

The second half saw much of the same both side working hard working from end to end.

With less than 10 minutes left to play, a ball in from May on the right found Thomas who slipped the ball into the circle to Amanda Trotter who found a gap past Sweeney to give the 1sts the lead.

With only minutes to go the 2nds were awarded a late penalty corner however the 1st team defence cleared the ball with confidence ending the match 2-1.
